The English language research: Norway – very good, Kazakhstan – no good.

In which countries does the population know English the best?

According to the new global research, the first place belongs to Norwegians, and the last one – to Kazakhstan. The research didn’t take place in Ukraine.

The citizens of countries of Northern Europe, in particular Scandinavia, know English the best. According to the research held by the international company EF (Education First), in the first five there are: Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

The citizens of these countries know English perfectly well. In Scandinavian countries the TV broadcasts English feature films without translation, but with subtitles. Ukraine isn’t presented in this research. Such countries close the list of 44 countries: Thailand, Turkey and Kazakhstan, where knowledge of English is very poor.

Russia has assumed 32 spot. The Russian population knows English on a satisfactory level.

The research was carried out with the help of free online tests, in which more than 2 million people took part in 2007-2009. On the basis of these results English Proficiency Index EPI was calculated, i.e. index of the English language knowledge.

Experts of the EF Company, which carried out the research, noticed, that in the countries with the best knowledge of English, the GDP per head was higher. They say that rich countries spend more on education of population and English language study, as a language of international communication and business. However it is not always fair.

For example, although Spain, Italy and France are considered to be rich, but their population knows English worse than, for example, Poles or Argentineans.

Education First Company calls itself a leader on the travel market for language study, cultural exchange and international education programs.

Founded in 1965, the EF Company consists of 16 units, which offer a wide range of programs: from language courses and educational trips to gaining of an academic degree and cultural exchange.

The EF has 400 schools and offices in more than 50 countries worldwide.
