How to Work from Home As a Freelance Translator?

For many people, being a freelance translator is a perfect job and it really does have some great perks. For those of you who prefer working in your slippers or cannot afford to rent an office, here are some tips how to work from home.

Edit Steps

1. 1

Become a qualified translator This goes without saying, right? For some tips, check out How to succeed as a freelance translator, How to become a translator or How to become a professional translator or interpreter.

2. 2

Check if your country requires you being registered, how to pay taxes and everything else, you do not want to get into trouble. Some countries have different legislation and require different things based on whether you work from home or not.

3. 3

You will need to make sure you are active in the business, this has nothing to do with working from home or not. So check out How to Succeed as a freelance translator for tips on that.

4. 4

Evaluate your home situation. Do you have a lot of space? Do you live with someone? Can you potentially meet clients there?

5. 5

If you live with your family, partner, roommates or parents, make sure they understand when you cannot be disturbed. Simply closing the door works pretty well as a sign of being busy.

6. 6

If your place is not suitable for meeting clients, this might be a problem. You can either try adapting it (which requires time and money, however) or meet them outside (which, on the other hand, is less comfortable).

7. 7

Make sure you have everything you need. As a translator, you are not going to need a lot of things - a computer, Internet connection, a printer, dictionaries and some office supplies will usually do the trick. (Personal note: If you're a normal human, you're most probably going to need coffee as well. Lots of coffee.)

8. 8

Create a good working environment. Preferably, this should be a separate room for you to work in where nobody disturbs you. However, this is not necessary. Just have a comfortable desk somewhere you can concentrate. Choose well, if you're successful, you'll be spending a lot of time in that spot.

9. 9

Organize your time. This is always important, but especially when working from home because this can create a delusion of not having to work and you can easily start slacking behind. Make a schedule, work effectively and be sure to keep deadlines.
